At Pomoco, we often find ourselves returning to Indian craft practices to learn from. For Rethal Greens, this led us to the mural traditions of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh
Over a decade ago, the Bsafal team planted more than 25,000 trees in the village of Rethal, Gujarat. What has since emerged is a dense, self-sustaining landscape- home to indigenous species like Neem, Champa, and Subabul. The project stands today as a growing ecology, gradually transitioning into future heritage.
In order to capture their legacy, we collaborated with Bsafal to create a distinct visual identity for this project - one that highlights the majesty and economic affordability of these lands.
Our approach began with studying Khovar and Sorai art forms that are traditionally practiced by tribal women. Khovar uses charcoal as a medium and is largely used on the interior walls of a newlywed couple’s house, its motifs symbolizing healthy fertility. Whereas Sorai is used on the exterior walls and in some cases cave paintings depicting communal bonds and agriculture rituals.

The early explorations brought together multiple elements-trees and water bodies-into a single emblem.
Over time, this was reduced to a more singular form. What remained was a leaf-like figure, distilled from our studies and paired with a dot that suggests water. The final logo is minimal but symbolizes a larger ecosystem and is open to interpretation.
Our explorations of showing the property as an ecosystem are applied across collateral, alongside the logo.
A palette of greens, greys, and blues draw from the landscape to create deep and muted backgrounds. Photographic imagery of the site plays an important role in the system.

Throughout the process, we wanted to remain attentive to the context. This project is a nod to our intent to create powerful imagery of land and place using Indian craft.
